Greater Manchester business organisations call for greater clarity on three-tier system to ‘keep the economy moving’

Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, CBI and Marketing Manchester are among of a handful of business organisations calling for clarity on the three-tier system of restrictions.

The organisations, representing more than 30,000 businesses across Greater Manchester, have asked the government to set out a number of requirements to ‘keep the economy moving’.

It comes after Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Monday that pubs, bars, gyms, betting shops, casinos, and adult gaming centres in Liverpool City Region are to shut from Wednesday under a new three-tier ‘traffic light system’.

The group of organisations also includes the Federation of Small Businesses, Manchester Hoteliers Association, Growth Company, North West Business Leadership Team and ICAEW.

They have asked for four key requirements; a transparent and evidence-based set of criteria for movement between tiers, a clear and transparent exit routeway, compensatory support mechanism for businesses and employees, and a fully functioning test, trace and isolate system.

The organisations said: “Greater Manchester is home to a thriving private sector and a well-established business support base that works tirelessly on behalf of Greater Manchester’s business ecosystem.

“The impact of Covid-19 on Greater Manchester businesses is enormous in the short-term, and with potentially profound long-term implications.

“We need to set a platform for the immediate future that enables our businesses to emerge from a position of strength, driving forward both the city-region and our country’s economic revival.”
