Greater Manchester braced for thunderstorms as 36-hour warning for 'flooding' and 'travel disruption' issued

Greater Manchester is set to be battered by thunderstorms as a 36-hour warning for disruption has been issued.

The Met Office have warned of potential flooding and travel disruption as the storms are set to move in from later this week.

Most of the country has been enjoying a prolonged period of hot and sunny weather, but that could come to an abrupt end.

A yellow warning for thunderstorms has been issued by the weather service from 6pm on Wednesday until 6am on Friday.

The warning covers all of Greater Manchester, including some parts of Lancashire, Yorkshire and other areas of the country.

According to the Met Office, cloudier and more unsettled weather could move in across the region from Wednesday.

"Cloudier on Wednesday with patchy outbreaks of rain," they said.

"Risk of heavy, perhaps thundery showers overnight into Thursday with largely cloudy skies during the day.

"Sunny spells and maybe showers Friday."

They added: "Some places are likely to see thunderstorms later Wednesday through to Friday with the potential for travel disruption and flooding."

The weather service have warned of a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail and strong winds.

Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services

Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.

There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads.

There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.
