Greater Manchester basks in sunshine as hottest day of the year predicted for Bank holiday

Just a few weeks ago, shoppers spent their Bank holiday queuing in the rain to get into the Trafford Centre.

What a difference a few weeks can make.

Greater Manchester now basks in sunshine and hot weather, as people enjoy the late May Bank holiday.

And by the end of the Bank holiday, we are expected to have enjoyed the hottest day of the year.

Temperatures are expected to reach a high of 22C today, with sunny spells remaining into the evening.

And it is expected to stay at that temperature, if not warmer, during the early part of the week.

People will be well advised to grab their sun cream rather than their brollies during this Bank holiday Monday, with temperatures forecasted to reach 23C and UV levels set to be high.

Sunny spells are expected until the early afternoon, with more cloud developing into the evening.

And on Tuesday and Wednesday, forecasters predict the mercury will hit 24C.

Spaces in pub gardens and parks are likely to be at a premium as people flock to enjoy the warm weather.

“We could potentially get to the hottest day of the year but definitely by tomorrow," Met Office meteorologist Becky Mitchell said.

And the warm weather follows a rain soaked May, which was the fourth wettest on record for the UK.

But the warm weather is expected to stick around until at least next weekend, when temperatures are predicted to reach 20C.
