CHENNAI: The Greater Chennai Corporation, which has vaccinated 25 lakh people so far, has declared that it does not have stock as of July 1 and that its vaccination camps will not function on Friday. “As soon as the vaccines are available, they will be operational again,” said messages on the civic body’s social media handles.
A civic official said the GCC had been informed that it would get some stock of vaccines in the night, but it was not sure if the doses would reach in time. The civic body did not want to leave people waiting at the vaccination camps. Once we get the vaccines, we will post the news on the social media handles, said an official.
The civic body has given 25.6 lakh people at least one dose and 6.5 lakh of them had got both doses. “We have about 60 lakh people in the above 18 years category staying in the GCC area as per our database. Of them we have almost reached 42%. This is a huge number. If we have enough stock, we can easily avccinate 50,000 people every day and vaccinate all in just a few months,” said an official.
The civic body runs ad hoc vaccination centres daily in 45 locations and vaccinates a few at health centres and hospitals.
