Great white shark rips seal apart in front of horrified beachgoers

Horrifying footage shows water turning red because of a great white shark attack on a seal in front of shocked tourists.

The clip was taken in Cape Cod in Massachusetts in the US.

The shark is seen thrashing around in the water while taking chunks out of the seal.

As life drains from its prey, blood is shown seeping into the sea.

Video was taken by onlooker Lara Bone on Saturday, and has since been shared by Atlantic White Shark Conservancy, racking up more than 250,000 views.

Viewers were stunned to see that the predator was able to carry out the attack so close to the beach.

One, Gene Vieve, wrote: "Wow! Amazing to capture a predation so close to shore!"

Another described it as very cool and said it was a sign of a healthy ecosystem.

Trevor Spradlin wrote: "This is definitely something to celebrate and not fear!

"These are all great indicators that the local marine ecosystem is finally rebounding after decades of protection to make amends for the centuries of environmental damage caused by people.

"We can coexist with sharks and seals if we try."

One viewer said the incident is a sign of a recovering ecosystem (Facebook)

But one said: "That would scare the p*** out of me, and does a little just watching the video. It seems they are so close to shore."

It follows an increase in shark sightings in the area.
