Great white shark leaps up and snatches fish just inches from little boy

Incredible footage shows the moment a great white shark leaps out of the water and snatches a fish just inches away from a little boy.

The boy and his family had just caught the fish in Cape Cod Bay when it was snatched by the beast.

The jaw-dropping video shows the group of parents and children reeling in the fish while on board a boat off the coast o Orleans, Massachusetts on Saturday.

Without warning, the shark sprung out of the water and grabbed the fish, causing one young boy who was within touching distance of the animal to jerk back.

Columbia Sportfishing shared the video on their Instagram page and said it was a "real-life episode of Shark Week".

Captain Marc Costa told MassLive : “Bringing the fish in, you can see what happened. That animal came up and grabbed the fish, right there. Right in our faces. It was pretty cool.”

He added: “It came up and it grabbed the fish and then it made a circular leap to get back in the water and go away.

“It actually slapped the boat with its tail.”

In the video, the family on the boat can be heard yelling when the shark first appears from the water.

It then quickly disappears (Doug Nelson)

Once it disappears, some look over the side of the boat, not quite believing what they saw.

Shark sightings are thought to be common in the waters off Cape Cod Bay as they visit to prey upon seals in the area.

Last year, one man died and another was seriously injured by sharks in the area.
