Great white shark dragged out to sea by 'hero' after it beached itself

A beachgoer has been praised a 'hero' as he rescued a dying great white shark and dragged it back to the water.

Josh Grimshaw spotted the apex predator beached at the Muriwai Beach in New Zealand as it lied on the sand, gasping for air.

He said the shark was trapped in a boating rope which dragged it ashore.

Mobile phone footage showed Josh grabbing the shark by its fins and pushing it back to the water.

As the shark gets into the water, Josh holds onto its body and tried to direct it to safety.

He pushes the predator further towards the deep waters and waits till he sees its razor-sharp fin cuts through the wave.

Josh stays and watches on to ensure the shark didn't swim back towards the shore.

He later shared the footage on social media and amassed thousands of views over the past few days.

They praised Josh a good Samaritan as one said: "Wow, good job."

Another one wrote: "You're a hero."

Last month, similar incident happened to a sperm whale calf but it died shortly after being washed up at a beach at Hell’s Mouth in Gwynedd, North Wales.

A spokesperson of the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) estimated the calf to be between two and three-years-old, which could make it the youngest ever stranded.

When a whale finds itself in shallow or inland waters this is more often than not a sign that something has gone wrong, such as a navigational error.

Once in these waters, they generally become trapped and unable to feed which causes them to deteriorate.
