'Great ship' that travelled Dun Laoghaire to Holyhead route for decades set for scrap heap

A "great ship" which travelled from Dun Laoghaire to Holyhead for decades will soon be scrapped.

The St Columba had capacity for 2,400 passengers and served the Dun Laoghaire to Holyhead route between 1977 and 1997.

The ship is now called MS Masarrah, and is being scrapped for metal in Pakistan.

And south Dublin locals have shared stories of journeys on the ship in a residents' group.

One said: "Fond memories of that ship. It was part of the Dun Laoghaire ‘skyline’ throughout the eighties and I used to love going over on it to visit relatives."

Another wrote: "Many happy memories of travelling on that boat. Such a shame the route shut down as well."

A third said: "Was on that a few times. Great service from Dun Laoghaire to Holyhead."
