The last time we saw Christopher Lloyd’s Doc Brown he was travelling back in time on a flying stream train with his family. He has in fact also been glimpsed a few times since: in video games and cartoon spin-offs and a cameo in Seth MacFarlane’s A Million Ways to Die in the West.
But Doc Brown Saves the World is our first glimpse of a new bonafide Emmett Brown adventure: a short that will accompany the 30th anniversary boxset of Back to the Future. It is also the first look at how Lloyd, now 76, plays the role without the requirement of recourse to ageing make-up.
The DVD set will be released in early October, ahead of Back to the Future II day on the 21st, when celebrations round the world will mark the arrival of the date to which Doc and Michael J Fox’s Marty travel in the second instalment.
The short is set on that date, and features self-tying Nike hi-tops, as sported by Marty in the film. Little is know of the plot or supporting cast – the 40-second teaser suggests intervention may be required to repair Doc’s camcorder’s auto visual tracking system, as well as – as per the title – to prevent apocalypse.
