'Great' - Nottingham Forest youngster earns high praise from new manager

Nottingham Forest youngster Brennan Johnson has been tipped to bring ‘real quality’ to Lincoln City after enjoying an impressive debut for the Imps.

After signing a season-long loan with Michael Appleton’s side, Johnson was on the bench for Sunday’s League One clash with Charlton Athletic.

The 19-year-old came on midway through the second half and produced a lively cameo appearance.

The Imps won 2-0 thanks to goals from ex-Forest man Jorge Grant and Dutch defender Lewis Montsma.

“I’m getting to know the lads still but I can already see how hard they work,” said Johnson.

“It was good to get out there and feel the pace of the game. With the way the manager wants us to play, I can be really versatile in this team.

“I can play out wide and come inside, like Jorge [Grant], or play in a midfield three. I’m happy doing either.”

Appleton was glowing in his praise for the youngster.

“I thought he was great,” said the Imps boss. “He’s going to bring real quality to us, not only as someone who can assist goals but someone who can score goals as well.

“It was a difficult game for him to come into because they [Charlton] are a really physical side, but I thought he handled it really well.

“I think his best position is a 10, but with our options at this moment, it’s going to be difficult for us to do that.

“It will evolve because he can play either side, he can play as a nine. He’s not going to be a nine like Hopps [Tom Hopper], but he can play in that position.”

With the Imps facing eight games in October, Johnson should get plenty of game time for his new team, who have seen another on-loan forward, West Brom’s Callum Morton, ruled out for around two months with a shoulder injury.
