Great North Run: Why Sir Mo Farah is not eligible to win prize fund

Sir Mo Farah made history when he was first across the finish line for an unprecedented sixth time, but he won't earn a penny in prize money.

The in history to win the famous half marathon over six consecutive years.

But along with other professional elite athletes, who compete by invitation, he is not entitled to any prize money.

The Mirror reports that the first prize is £1,500.

Only amateur runners can compete for the prizes, which are handed out to the first five eligible candidates to cross the line.

Farah, however, did not run the event for free. He was paid a promotional fee for taking part.

The same is the case for all major global running events, with similar agreements in place for the likes of the London and Boston Marathons.

Farah has often told of his affection for the 13.1 mile race between Newcastle and South Shields , which he won for the first time in 2014.

The 36-year-old will once again use the marathon as part of his preparation for the Chicago Marathon, next month.

And last week he told of his excitement to once again run through the famous North East crowds.

Farah said: "I enjoy the support from the crowd and knowing the course inside out.

"The last mile and a bit I enjoy the most along the seafront with so many supporters.

"You only need to feel okay from mile 12, the crowd will take you over.

"It's very important to have the atmosphere and the community as one whole to support.

"The way they support is incredible, you don't get that in London."
