Great North Run photos: Best pictures as thousands of runners did the North East proud

You did us proud!

The world-famous was awash with smiles, tears and stories of triumph as thousands took part in this year's event.

Sir Mo Farah stole the show winning the men's elite race for a record sixth successive year.

, 36, was pushed hard by Tamirat Tola, but proved too strong in the final mile for the Ethiopian to finish the 13.1-mile half marathon course in 59 minutes and six seconds.

Tola, seven seconds behind Farah, crossed the line 42 seconds ahead of Holland's third-placed Abdi Nageeye, with Britain's Callum Hawkins coming home fourth in one hour and 39 seconds.

In the women's elite race, Kenya's Brigid Kosgei set a new course record and broke the world half marathon record by finishing in a time of 1:04:28.

David Weir won the men's wheelchair race, while Jade Hall triumphed in the women's race.

But the day was just as memorable for the tens of thousands of runners who also completed the gruelling 13.1 mile course.

, thousands of spectators lined the streets to cheer on the runners.

The crowd burst into cheers and applause as runners crossed the finishing line, where many were greeted by their loved ones.

The race completed a weekend of events including the Great North 5K, mini and junior and the Great North City games.
