Great North Run 2021 runners offered free pints after race at Newcastle bar

By Simon Duke

A Newcastle bar is offering free pints to everyone who takes part in this year's Great North Run on Sunday.

After it was cancelled last year due to Covid, the world's most famous half marathon returns for 2021 this weekend, with tens of thousands of runners taking to the start line.

The elite runners this year won't be led by Mo Farah, after he pulled out due to illness. Scores of others will be there, some running for charity, others for themselves, some of whom will be putting on their race number for the first time,.

There's a massive difference to the route of the 13 mile race this year. The Great North Run always finishes in South Shields, but not this year, with both the start line and finish line in Newcastle.

Runners will make their return to the city on the flyover near to the usual halfway point near Whitemare Pool, with this year's Athletes Village on the Town Moor.

And the fact that the race finishes in Newcastle is rather handy as Cloth Market bar Market Shaker is serving up some well deserved free bevs for all runners.

Announcing the generous offer on Facebook on Saturday, the Market Shaker posted: "Great North Runners listen up, we wanted to give you a special little Market Shaker pat on the back for conquering the legendary Great North Run tomorrow and raising much needed funds for so many charities up and down the country in the process!

"So Good Luck for tomorrow and we’ll see you at the real finish line!"
