Great Manchester Run 2022 road closures for 10k and half marathon races

The Great Manchester Run returns to the city this weekend, with thousands of athletes taking on the 10k and half marathon events.

One of the biggest races in Europe, all the action will be broadcast live over on the BBC. The day will feature live music from eight entertainment zones - and, of course, the sound of thousands of supporters cheering on the athletes.

The event takes place on Sunday 22 May with start times staggered throughout the day. The 10k route, which is 6.9 miles shorter than the half marathon, will allow participants to take in the view of Manchester United’s Old Trafford stadium, the award-winning Imperial War Museum at Salford Quays, and The Lowry.

The half marathon route takes runners past both iconic football stadiums, joining the 10k route in running past the Coronation Street set in Salford Quays and Beetham Tower, the 47-storey skyscraper that will mark the finish line

A couple of roads will shut on Saturday, but many more will be closed on Sunday to facilitate the run. This may also affect those traveling to the Etihad for Manchester City’s final game against Aston Villa, which kicks off at 4pm.

Transport for Greater Manchester warned: "Many of the closures will begin to be lifted from 1pm, there may be increased congestion and delays on the roads around the stadium." More advice for the Great Manchester Run and Manchester City match can be found on the TfGM website.
