Great Manchester Run 2019 weather: Will the sun shine for competitors this weekend?

After a great start to the weather this week with temperatures as hot as 22C in Manchester, it sadly may not hold out for the big race on Sunday.

An expected 30,000 runners will take over the city centre on Sunday May 19 for the SimplyHealth Great Manchester Run, but the thousands of spectators may need to pack a brolly.

Today's weather forecast remains dry and sunny after the UK enjoyed its hottest day of the year yesterday as temperatures in Kinlochewe, Scotland, reached 25.8C.

However Met Office meteorologist Aidan McGivern said there's "a slow change on the way."

He added: "On Friday we'll see an initial spell of rain pushing its way west across parts of England and Wales followed by showers followed by a lot of cloud cover.

"Compared to recent days it's going to be much more cloud in the sky across England, Wales and southeastern Scotland.

"Temperatures on their way down and certainly on that North Sea coast it will feel quite chilly with the wind coming in from the east."

We can see the cloud heading our way tomorrow across Europe from the Met Office twitter account:

Instead of sweltering in the scorching heat, runners should experience 'light cloud and a gentle breeze', according to BBC Weather, which may help them on their way.

Thankfully Saturday will be the dampest day of the weekend, with rainshowers moving in with the possibility of a bit of thunder.

It is not expected to pour it down during the run, but there could be some showers during some of the event.

Here's the full forecast for on the day of the SimplyHealth Great Manchester Run:

Temperatures range from 11C to 16C over the course of the day with a low chance of rain at 14 per cent. We're likely to see sunny spells later in the day after 6pm, just in time for post-run celebrations.
