Great Junction Street in Leith closed this morning for five days as roadworks got underway.
The A901 will be off-limits between Cables Wynd and Henderson Street to traffic heading south east towards Leith Walk.
The measure, which is expected to cause extra delays on the road and surrounding routes, was introduced at 8am and is expected to remain in place until 4pm on Friday.
The City of Edinburgh Council say that this is for carriageway resurfacing to be carried out, and traffic will be diverted via Cables Wynd, Parliament Street and Henderson Street as signed.
There will also be disruption on Leith Walk and Ferry Road this week.
On Leith Walk the stretch between Union Street and the London Road roundabout will be hit with northbound lane restrictions and parking suspensions as ground investigation works take place ahead of the tram extension.
And on Ferry Road works on the carriageway will see three-way temporary traffic lights brought in at Pennywell Road.
Both routes will also be affected until Friday.
