Great Ireland Run pushed back until 2021

The 2020 Great Ireland Run has been pushed back to next year.

The 10 km Phoenix Park race, originally penned for April 5, was initially postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Organisers were planning to stage the race later in the year, but have now taken the decision to push it back to next year.

All entries will be valid to compete in the 2021 race, with runners also entitled to a full refund if requested.

"We know this is extremely disappointing for all runners, and we thank everyone who had entered up until this point for their patience in allowing us to examine every possible option available to us," Race Director Dermot Nagle said.

"We made the difficult decision in the best interest of the health and wellbeing of all those involved in the event.

"We thank all of our participants, suppliers, volunteers and sponsors for their continued support, and we look forward to making the 2021 edition a real celebration of running."

Athletics Ireland CEO, Hamish Adams added: "We are all disappointed that one of the top recreational road races in the country, as well as our own National 10km Championships will not take place in 2020.

"Postponing this year's race is the right and responsible decision and we can all look forward to a fantastic event when the Great Ireland Run returns in 2021.

"We must say a huge thank you to our sponsors Deep Heat and Deep Freeze who have remained committed to the event throughout."
