Great-grandpa, 89, dies desperately trying to save disabled wife from house fire

A great-grandad died as he tried to rescue his disabled wife from a fire.

Malcolm and Margaret Nokes were together till the last in the rented home they had been living in since they got married nearly 60 years ago

Margaret, 86, who was deaf and struggled to walk, was found in a lounge armchair.

Malcolm, 89, lay dead at her feet.

Neighbours tried to help but the couple died of smoke inhalation.

An inquest heard an electrical fault probably sparked the April 5 blaze in a cupboard under the stairs used to store newspapers in the semi-detached house in Kirby Muxloe, Leicester.

Leicester assistant coroner Lydia Brown said: “Malcolm was attempting to raise the alarm and assist his wife when he died.

“Despite the undoubtedly heroic efforts by the fire crews that night, nothing could be done.”

A verdict was returned of accidental death
