Great-grandmother claims to own 'world's oldest' Easter egg

A great-grandmother believes she owns the "world's oldest" unopened Easter egg that is 73 years old - trumping the previous estimate by 11 years, reports the Mirror. June Dawlton, 80, has come forward and said that to her, a 62-year-old egg is considered nearly new.

She was given the white sugar egg by her brother some 73 years ago - and it has since survived three house moves without so much as a crack. Yesterday, the Mirror shared the story of Hillion Fern and her 62-year-old Easter egg, which she was given by her father when she was 11 years old, and was thought to be the oldest.

Speaking exclusively to the Mirror, June said: "I had it when I was seven years old and I'm nearly 81, so that's quite old. It was a nice white sugar one, and inside was a little cardboard boy and girl I think, with a little lamb. Now the sugar has turned brown but I'm still holding onto it. A couple of years ago it was still white with a bit of brown, but now it's totally brown."

Dating back to 1949, June's Easter egg is older than Meryl Streep, predates the moon landing, and was made while King George VI was still on the throne. Despite being a child of just seven at the time, June, from Haverhill, Suffolk, decided not to eat the chocolate egg because "it just looked so nice".

She said: "It was a gift from my brother and sister in law, that was when they were courting. I think it was bought from Dalston in Hackney, from a little tobacconist by the station.

"It's just been stored away, my brother stored it for a few years then he gave it back to me. It's just been in the cupboard. It's in its original box, the packing is proper cellophane - you don't see that so much these days."
