A great-grandmother aged 89 fought screwdriver-wielding burglars who burst into her bedroom and punched and kicked her husband to the floor.

Pritam and Harbhjan Noorpuri were in their bungalow in Uxbridge when four masked raiders forced open a window and climbed inside.

One intruder swung a screwdriver at retired headteacher Mr Noorpuri, 86, which he managed to grab, before two others forced him down into a gap between two beds.

He was punched and kicked during the 15-minute attack and suffered three fractured ribs. His wife then intervened and grappled with the attackers.

She was slammed into a television by one raider who warned her, “Lady don’t go there”, before pushing her into the same gap where her husband was trapped.

But she managed to activate her community care alarm, and the intruders fled with cash and jewellery.

The couple’s son Satnam, 60, said: “Mum did really well. Something was pumping in her blood when she saw them attacking her beloved.”

Mr Noorpuri spent four nights in hospital while Mrs Noorpuri was discharged after one following the break-in at 9.30pm on June 30.

Anyone with information is asked to call officers in the West Area Command Unit on 101 and quote CR914824/19 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
