Great-grandfather from Yate dies after contracting coronavirus

A Yate great-grandfather who contracted coronavirus died at Southmead Hospital following a two-week battle.

John Packwood, who used to write theatre and gig reviews for the Bristol Post, had underlying health conditions before he was diagnosed with Covid-19.

While in Southmead Hospital, his family were unable to visit the 84-year-old even after medics confirmed there was no further treatment available.

However, his family were able to speak to Mr Packwood on his mobile phone in his final days. During his stay in hospital, he was not taken into intensive care or put on a ventilator. He died on Monday, April 10 at 1pm.

His son Paul, from Southmead, said he has been left frustrated by people who have been flouting social distancing rules.

"You might not agree with the government but you should do what they say," said John. "They are dong their best, I believe, to save lives.

"The distancing is hard, I haven't seen my grandchild for weeks but the rules have to be followed."

Mr Packwood leaves behind five children, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Only 10 people are allowed to attend his funeral which will take place in the coming weeks.

"He loved classical music, " said Paul, aged 53. "He was also a big sports fan. He loved cricket and his football, he was a Rovers fan."
