Great-gran says love for walnuts and G&T is secret to long life as she turns 103

A great-gran says she has reached 103 thanks to a daily handful of walnuts...together with a gin and tonic.

The secrets of Stella Monks’ long life were shared as she was presented with a huge bunch of blooms to mark her birthday.

And is seems science backs up Stella’s choice of treats - with walnuts found to be packed with healthy nutrients and linked to a reduction in cholesterol, cancers and heart disease.

Meanwhile, juniper berries in gin contain anti-oxidents to ward off illness.

Stella now lives in a complex run by Warrington Housing Association in Cheshire which was keen to mark her milestone.

It said: “Happy 103rd birthday to Stella. She is our kind of woman. Our Independent Living Co-ordinator Kimberley Flynn dropped in with flowers from all of us.”

Stella grew up in Leeds and was a dressmaker before switching to a munitions plant during the War.

Stella and husband Eric were married for 53 years before he passed away.

Along with son Steven, Stella has a granddaughter, grandson and two great granddaughters.
