Great-gran, 94, 'becomes oldest migrant to reach UK after crossing Channel'

A 94-year-old great-grandmother has reportedly become the oldest migrant to cross the English Channel.

She was among a group who made the hazardous journey to reach Britain, but faces being deported.

The woman, who has not been identified, travelled to the the UK to join family members, the Daily Mail reports.

She was taken into social service care, it is believed - but it is unclear whether she will be allowed to remain in the country.

Home Secretary Priti Patel has come under fire after claiming it is "unviable" for migrants to continue travelling to the UK.

She has launched aggressive measures to prevent people crossing the Channel.

Earlier this week 28-year-old Sudanese migrant Abdulfatah Hamdallah drowned when the dinghy he was in with a friend sank close to the French coast.

The survivor was a teenager, Philippe Sabatier, Boulogne-sur-Mer's deputy public prosecutor, said.

He stated that the pair had been living at the "Jungle" camp in Calais for two months before attempting to cross the sea in a dinghy.

Tragically "football-loving" Abdulfatah died when the tiny vessel capsized.

Mr Sabatier said: “I don’t know if he had applied for asylum with British authorities, but he appears to have done so with the French authorities.”

Abdulfatah's body was discovered at Sangatte, near Calais, on Wednesday morning.

He is thought to have died within a few minutes of entering the water, while the friend survived with minor injuries and hypothermia.
