Great British School Swap mum's hilarious panic over halal lettuce

Bringing together two cultures for a radical social experiment was always going to be a challenge, but the results of last night's Great British School Swap left viewers in absolute stitches.

Dan's mum Kate invited Miriam's family over for dinner to bridge the social divide and chose to make halal paprika chicken wraps on the Channel 4 show.

But she found the food shop harder than she'd anticipated, as she questioned whether the lettuce she was buying was halal.

The quip had viewers in hysterics, with one saying: "I can't cackle any louder tonight."

Last week Kate and her son Dan went to dinner at Miriam's house, where they bonded and asked each other questions about their different backgrounds.

Tonight it was Kate's turn to host Miriam's family, but she struggled to understand the diet that they follow.

She wasn't sure what halal food was, telling the cameras: "Halal is chicken that's been... erm..."

Dan also wasn't sure, saying: "I think it’s a certain cut of meat that you're not able to eat, like I think it’s the back end of an animal."

Kate went to the supermarket to buy some iceberg lettuce for the wraps, but flew into a panic when the packaging didn't make it clear if they were halal or not.

"Does it have to be halal?" she asked her son.

Dan said: "Yes, everything has to be halal."

"Where am I going to get that from?" she panicked.

Viewers branded her worrying hilarious because, as most people know, halal refers to how meat is prepared and not lettuce.

One tweeted: "Watching @Channel4 #GreatBritishSchoolSwap and this family are shopping for Halal lettuce. Nah I’m done."

"Did that woman just really ask if Lettuce was halal?" another laughed.

Another wrote: "Hilarious asking if lettuce is halal. More of this should happen across the UK to educate todays young people on wider cultural society."
