Great British Bake Off: Viewers react to first episode of new season

The Great British Bake Off has finally returned to our screens after almost a year away.

Last night saw 12 new bakers enter the tent, and fans across the country were quick to share their thoughts on the new contestants.

Here's a rundown of some of the biggest takeaways from the premiere, as well as viewers' reaction to them.

The lack of Scottish contestants was noticeable

This year's Bake Off line-up was announced last week, and many people already expressed their disappointment at the England-heavy selection of bakers.

Upon watching the first episode, though, many more were quick to share their despair.

One Twitter user argued: "Imagine if there was a great British bake off with only Scottish people? You'd be furious."

"Couldn’y find a Scottish guy naw?", a second questioned.

Not only was the lack of Scottish bakers criticised, but also the absence of contestants from elsewhere in the UK.

One disappointed fan wrote: "I see the #GBBO Great English Bake Off has stated.

"Nobody from Scotland, Wales or NI. Made it to the program."

Another stated: "I watched the GBBO last night. There was every other nationality represented, including English but not one Scottish, Irish (Republic or Northern) or Welsh person.

"Now, that's not very British is it?"

"Great to see absolutely zero Scottish Welsh or Irish people on bake off this year #GBBO", said another.

Jürgen is an early favourite

Although it's still early days to pick a firm favourite, IT professional Jürgen seems to have leapt to the front for many viewers after the first episode.

Originally from Black Forest in Germany, he charmed fans with his quiet demeanour and thoughtful cakes.

"Jurgen…my favourite so far," said one viewer.

A second wrote: "i could cry everytime jurgen speaks i love him so much".

"Protect Jurgen at all costs, so so wholesome", commented a third.

One moment in particular that struck a chord with viewers was when he attempted to call his family to tell them he had won star baker - a long-time tradition - but no one picked up the phone.

"Can't believe nobody picked up the phone when Jurgen called to tell them he'd won star baker IM GONNA CRY", one wrote alongside a picture of a cat crying.

Maggie and Prue look very similar

Retired nurse and midwife Maggie caught attention for her fun and bubbly personality - but not as much as her uncanny resemblance to judge Prue Leith.

Fans were quick to pick up on the similarity, posting comments and memes about the two women.

"Maggie and Prue: separated at birth?", one keen-eyed viewer tweeted.

"Maggie is an older Prue, I can't unsee it and i love her already", a second enthused.

Watchers were also quick to pick up on the rapport between the two, noticeable when Maggie tried on Prue's glasses and the two burst into laughter.

"I'm really here for this Prue & Maggie relationship that's forming," one wrote.

"I expect by next week Davina’s confirmed Prue and Maggie as long lost sisters," said another, referencing the TV show Long Lost Family.

A third wrote: "Maggie and Prue is the relationship I’ve been waiting for years to see!" alongside a heart emoji.

Noel Fielding's jumper

Ever since he started hosting the show, Noel's unexpected fashion choices have remained a highlight of each week.

Series 12 kicked off with maybe on of his best looks - an oversized black jumper with huge pink smiley faces on it - and fans were quick to share their adoration.

"Watching #GBBO and I'm obsessed with Noel's jumper", tweeted one fan of the show.

Another agreed: "Strong jumper choice from Noel".

Some picked up on the striking similarity between Matt's jumper and what car production operative Lizzie was wearing - a pink dress with happy and sad faces on it.

"Obsessed with Lizzie wearing sad faces and Noel Fielding wearing smiley faces", someone tweeted.

"Lizzie and Noel are twins. Just look at them", another fan said.

One even did some sleuthing and managed to track down the jumper online - though those looking to get their hands on it will be disappointed.

"In case anyone else was wondering about Noel Fielding’s jumper.. it’s out of stock," they wrote alongside of a screenshot of the jumper on clothes website I Saw It First.
