Great British Bake Off star's sister found 'alive but very distressed' after disappearing in Portugal

Former Great British Bake Off champion John Whaite says his sister has been found 'alive and sober but very, very distressed' after going missing in Portugal.

The Wigan-born star thanked fans for sharing an online appeal after Victoria Cunningham disappeared on Saturday.

John, 31, tweeted that Victoria had been found 'just in time', the Mirror reports.

He said: "I am delighted to say that Victoria has been found. She is alive, she is sober but she is very, very distressed (it seems she was found JUST in time).

"A stranger recognised her and took her into her house. Each and every one of you, who has tweeted, shared and commented, has saved a life today. And I cannot thank you enough - you are all angels.

"We are now going to focus on getting her home and back in good health in the privacy and protection of our family. My gratitude to each one of you is undying. You’ve helped save a sister, a daughter and a mother.

"Thank you."

John - who used to present ITV show Chopping Block - earlier said his sister had no passport or money on her.

The cook tweeted: "My sister has gone missing from Faro Airport.

"We are all worried for her welfare."

He posted four photos of his sibling on Twitter.

John won the 2012 series of the BBC's Bake Off show.

Victoria also works in the food industry and runs the Tunley Hall Catering Company, which is based in Wrightington in Wigan.
