Great British Bake Off's Giuseppe shares his highs and lows ahead of Channel 4 finale

The Bake Off final is the closest in the show’s history with all three finalists having achieved two Star Baker awards - and two handshakes from judge Paul Hollywood.

Viewers will find out tonight whether Giuseppe Dell'Anno, Chigs Parmar or Crystelle Pereira will walk away as winner of this year’s series.

As the only Bristolian to make it this far in the competition, we are, of course, Team Giuseppe, but according to the Italian-born baker the final three became so close while filming they "didn't care who won."

In an interview ahead of tonight's finale - which was pre-recorded over the summer - Giuseppe said that being told he was the best in certain weeks helped him to perform better in the tent.

"I certainly relaxed a little after the first Star Baker: I felt like I already got much more than I was hoping for, so I had nothing left to prove to myself," he explained.

The Italian engineer dad-of-three, 45, also enjoyed getting those handshakes from Paul.

"I was overwhelmed by emotions in both cases, in bread week and patisserie, but I must admit that getting recognition for a focaccia based on flavours and ingredients that were so closely linked to my family members and my own heritage was very powerful."

He said that the friendships made during filming were real.

"You always hear these stories of wonderful friendships being born in the tent. And I must admit that the cynical part of me has always wondered how genuine they were.

"Well, it turns out: very! I have never felt so close and in-tune with anybody I had only just met like I did with my fellow bakers."

He insisted that the three finalists became such close pals after weeks of living together in a hotel "bubble" that they didn’t care who won.

"On our last day, Chigs, Crystelle and I walked into the tent knowing that we will leave it equally happy regardless of the outcome."

The Great British Bake Off final airs tonight on Channel 4 at 8pm
