Great British Bake Off’s Giuseppe recalls ‘special memory’ from week one as new series set to air

Giuseppe Dell’Anno, an Emersons Green engineer, is flying the flag for Bristol in the new series of The Great British Bake Off set to air tomorrow (Tuesday, September 21.)

He’ll join a host of other talented amateur bakers ready to prove themselves to Paul and Prue, in what’s set to be one of the ‘highest standard’ series’ yet.

The show has been pre recorded, with contestants, judges, and hosts Noel Fielding and Matt Lucas having bubbled up earlier this year.

Giuseppe, who will star alongside 19-year-old Freya and 70-year-old Maggie, recalled his ‘special memory’ from week one in an interview with Channel 4.

He said: “My special memory from week one is undoubtedly the very first time that Paul and Prue tried one of my bakes – I found it surreal that baking royalty was actually tasting something that I had baked.

“That was probably the moment in which I realised that it was really happening and that I was for all intents and purposes a real GBBO baker.”

He continued: "My main strengths are accuracy and attention to detail: the engineering side of my brain likes to do things in a structured and organised way, and I’m sure that this comes across in my bakes.

"This is also my main weakness though, as I cannot get myself to work on an untidy bench or in a messy kitchen… every time I bake at home, it takes me one hour just to get everything organised and ready before I even switch the oven on!"

Giuseppe says he is taking inspiration from several past contestants.

"There isn’t a single baker that inspired me to apply, but more a collection of traits from several bakers that I like to refer to," he said.

"For example, I aspire to keep the same cool head as Selasi did in the tent, the same level of attention to detail as Peter or achieve the same level of creativity as Kim-Joy."

Giuseppe, originally from Italy, lives in Bristol with his wife and three young sons.

He is a Chief Engineer at the National Composites Centre in Emersons Green, and has also worked as an industrial fellow at the University of Bristol.

His love for baking comes from his father, a professional chef who did all the cooking at home when Giuseppe was growing up.

Giuseppe loves using Italian flavours in his bakes, while he also brings his engineer’s precision to the results.

When he’s not baking, Giuseppe loves indulging his passion for design and architecture, and with his wife has renovated their family home. He also loves gardening.
