Great British Bake Off catch up: Pastry Week sees Dan leave the tent as Bryony wins Star Baker

The Great British Bake Off contestants have waved goodbye to another baker, as Dan was voted off by the judges over a soggy fish and some sad samosas during Pastry Week. “It was a disastrous week,” he admitted at the end of the show.

Meanwhile, Briony came out on top thanks to her showstopping venison pie, which was shaped like the top hat from Alice in Wonderland. Rahul and Ruby also impressed this week thanks to some samosa advice from their mums.

Manon struggled a bit on the French technical challenge (ironique, n'est pas?), where the contestants were asked to make some "Puits D'Amour" ("Wells of Love"). It's a French pastry that's something like a cross between a creme brulee and a flan. Once again, Dan struggled to keep up, finishing with flat pastry because he forgot to add sugar and had to open the oven during the cooking process.

Catch up with the latest in this series of the Great British Bake Off (please allow a moment for the liveblog to load).

Hello and welcome to our liveblog for this evening's episode of the Great British Bake Off!

Obviously there's a bit of a wait before the episode airs at 8pm tonight, but until then you can come up with some delicious pastry puns. That's right, it's Pastry Week!

"The pie's the limit"

It's been a couple of weeks, but I'm still not over Prue Leith telling us she doesn't actually have a passion for baking

Prue Leith admits she doesn't have a passion for baking but a passion for eating cakes

The IndependentNever one to sugarcoat her words, The Great British Bake Off judge said she 'prefers savoury cooking to baking'
Meanwhile, Paul Hollywood just revealed his Bake Off handshakes will "almost stop" before this series ends! He wants to raise the bar and make the Hollywood Handshake something of a rarity, so the bakers don't get too cocky.
Really enjoying these, thanks guys
Who do you lot think will go home this week?
The final preparations are underway for tonight's episode, apparently...

British Bake Off on Twitter

Twitter“Rumour has it that master of disguise Noel Fielding is going to come as the Bake Off tent tonight... #GBBO https://t.co/oLKwJ2AU2r”
So I've got Channel 4 on and an advert for Bake Off tonight just landed – looks like it's going to be a tense one!
(Tonight's episode starts in 18 minutes, by the way)
5 minutes to go!
Noel is dressed as a tent! OK here we go, seven bakers remain in the tent as pastry week gets underway.
A reminder of last time: it was all spice as Kim-Joy scored star baker for the first time. Sadly for Karen and Terry, it was a double elimination which saw them wave goodbye to the rest of the contestants.
Wow, Jon doesn't like pastry. He thinks it has cannibalistic tendencies. Kim-Joy is sounding a little more optim- oh wait.
The first challenge is samosas! The judges want the constants to make six savoury, and six sweet samosas. They have two hours. On your marks. get set, bake!
I'm enjoying Noel's shirt this week – a sort of sea green with a pattern of eagles. Noel loves a good eagle.
Ruby sounds pretty confident about her samosa. But she's also worried because of the extra cultural pressure (she's Indian). Rahul, on the other hand, is looking fairly relaxed (for Rahul, anyway).
Oooh Briony is making a PEANUT BUTTER SAMOSA>
Paul doesn't sound convinced by the tarte tatin samosa. I'm still drooling over that peanut butter one.

GBBO fans seemed to enjoy cracking a few pastry puns – many of them were cheeky twists on classic songs. Favourites The Independent spotted on Twitter included "Suet Child of Mine", "Don't bake my tart, my flaky-bakey tart", and "Can You Filo the Love Tonight".

We're pretty impressed with our own effort: "It takes choux to make a craquelin go right."

Earlier this week, Paul Hollywood has opened up about the latest series and also confirmed a major change – he's getting rid of his famous Hollywood Handshake! Or rather, he's reserving it for very, very special circumstances.

Speaking onThe Jonathan Ross Showabout how he's been receiving some criticism for how many handshakes he's dished out this series, he explained: “I've taken a bit of flack over [it]. The handshake came from when [bakes] looked very professional and they almost cross that line from being amateur to professional.

"Every year the standard has got better and better and better and this year has been phenomenal. Some of the flavours they are bringing out. Rahul's stuff has been incredible.”

He continued: “You will see it happen, the handshakes almost stop. Because what I've done is I've realised they are all moving up in standard so I've got to move my barrier up so that's exactly what I do, I raise the bar and then no one gets over the top of it.”

The Great British Bake Off airs on Channel 4 every Tuesday 8pm
