Great British Bake Off contestants from Merseyside through the years and where they placed

The Great British Bake Off has been a part of our lives since 2010 and viewers have spent weeks investing in homebakers and their incredible creations.

As they are tested on every aspect of their baking skills, we've seen dozens of contestants battle it out to be crowned the Great British Bake Off's Best Amateur Baker - including a number from Merseyside.

The first seven series of the show were broadcast on BBC, and from the eighth series to the present day The Great British Bake Off has been aired on Channel 4.

Some were the first to be eliminated in their series, whereas others have continued to appear on our screens over the years. But regardless, we've loved cheering them on from our homes and hearing their success stories.

Here, we take a look back at The Great British Bake Off alumni who hail from Merseyside and where they placed in their series.

Huyton nan Flo Atkins was the third contestant to be voted off series 8 of the Channel 3 show after being unable to rise to the challenge of bread week.

Flo, a former sausage factory worker, was encouraged by her son to take up baking as a hobby following the death of her husband two years prior.

At the time, fans were unable to cope as Flo got emotional when told she would be the third baker to leave the show during week three. She said that she would remember the experience for the rest of her life.

But while her teacakes and cottage loaf didn’t impress the judges her rapping skills on Bake Off: An Extra Slice were a showstopper.

Counted in by presenter and comedian Jo Brand, the then 71-year-old nan took to the floor with legendary Sugarhill Gang number ‘Rapper’s Delight’.

Kate Lyon - Series 8

Health and Safety Inspector Kate Lyon, from Huyton, appeared on series 8 of the Channel 4 show at the age of 29.

Predominately self-taught, Kate started to bake two years before the show when she started growing her own vegetables.

In week four of the competition, Kate was awarded star baker during caramel week.

The Huyton-born baker also got herself through to the semi final with her interpretation of the Liver Building made from Victoria Sponge.

Kate made it to the final and was runner up alongside Steven Carter-Bailey to winner Sophie Faldo.

The project manager, then aged 27, was awarded star baker on week four of the series, placing third in the technical challenge and wowing the judges with his 'A Bake Off Birthday' celebration cake during chocolate week.
