Ofcom receives more complaints over Great British Bake Off series opener

Complaints regarding the return of the Great British Bake Off have almost doubled since Tuesday night.

The Channel 4 hit was back on screens as 12 more home bakers began their quest to be crowned the country's best amateur baker.

However, as reported on Wednesday, some viewers were left divided over the series opener which saw Matt Lucas mimic the Prime Minister.

In the parody, which came straight after Boris Johnson addressed the nation with information of up to six months worth of more coronavirus restrictions, the new Bake Off host dressed as the PM, delivering a speech.

The key slogan, again mimicking the government's Covid-19 messaging, said "Stay Alert, Bake Cake, Save Loaves."

Ofcom has now confirmed to the M.E.N that the number of complains about the episode has risen to 339 with the "vast majority" still referring to the sketch.

An Ofcom spokesperson said: "We are assessing these complaints against our broadcasting rules, but are yet to decide whether or not to investigate."

It was the debut episode of the brand new series (Channel 4)

Within the skit, 46-year-old Lucas said: "We are now approaching phase 46 which means that from Tuesday morning or Wednesday evening, depending on your height, we are saying, with regards to baking, that if you must bake in a tent, bake in a tent, but please don't bake in a tent…"

Many viewers on social media hailed it as "the best opening ever" while some found it insensitive to those hit hardest by the pandemic.

The Great British Bake Off continues Tuesday at 8pm on Channel 4.
