Great British Bake Off and Gogglebox viewers to still face issues as Channel 4 offers update

Viewers of the Great British Bake Off, Gogglebox and other Channel 4 shows may still face issues, the broadcaster has confirmed.

Fans of the popular programmes were left complaining in recent weeks due to technical issues at the channel.

Last week, some Gogglebox viewers complained as there were no subtitles available for the show.

Prior to that, Bake Off was also affected by technical issues.

Fans of the baking show commented that the show was 'ruined' as some were faced with a screen which read: "Programme continues shortly," while others couldn't follow along due to the lack of captions.

But in a new statement, Channel 4 has confirmed that these issues will continue for a while longer yet.

The broadcaster explained how a fire suppression system was triggered on September 25 at Red Bee Media's broadcast centre, which transmits all Channel 4’s services.

As a result, a "large number of hard disks in a variety of systems were severely damaged," Channel 4 said.

The statement continued: "This significantly impacted the playout servers which meant that our channels and on-demand services were temporarily taken off-air.

"We immediately activated our emergency back-up system, and while our channels are back on-air, we are still trying to fix some significant problems.

Gogglebox viewers also faced problems (Channel 4)

"One of these is not being able to provide access services - subtitles, audio description or sign language support - for programmes broadcast since the incident.

"We know that this is incredibly frustrating for you and your families who rely on these services to watch your favourite programmes."

Giving an update, it added: "Unfortunately, at the moment we cannot provide audio description or sign language services at all. These services were irretrievably lost during the incident and we won’t be able to restore them until we move to the new system we are building."

Channel 4 did add, however, that they are "beginning to make progress" and tested subtitles on More4 and Channel 4 Friday’s Stand Up 2 Cancer's live show.

From this week, Gogglebox, the Great British Bake Off and its Extra Slice on All 4 will also have subtitles.

The statement added: "This week, we will begin to add subtitles for some of the programmes you have missed – Gogglebox, the Great British Bake Off and its Extra Slice – on All 4.

"However, this is a very labour-intensive process, so it isn’t possible to make every programme available simultaneously.

"We know this isn’t good enough, but it’s a start."

The broadcaster is now having to build a new system which has been ongoing over the last few weeks but said "there is still a considerable amount of work to be done."

It added: "That means that full access services might not be available until the middle of November. Clearly, if we can do anything to speed up this process, we will."
