Great British Bake Off 2020: Edinburgh student among contestants to take part as full list announced

A young Scot is among the 12 contestants battling it out to become Star Baker in this year’s series of The Great British Bake Off.

Peter Sawkins, who has been described as a ‘badminton ace’ from Edinburgh, will feature in the tent when the popular Channel 4 show returns to screens on September 22.

The 20-year-old was inspired to start baking for himself after watching the first series of the show in 2010.

With a total of eight years baking experience under his belt, Peter will be hoping it pays off to get that headline handshake from Paul Hollywood this series.

Writing on Instagram, the young baker couldn't contain his excitement as his dream of finally appearing on the show finally comes true.

He said: "So... this is a thing that happened.  #GBBO  What is this madness?!"

But he may receive more of an arm bump from the 54-year-old professional baker, as producers filmed this year's series amid the coronavirus pandemic.

All contestants and crew members quarantined together in a bubble while filming at Dawn Hall Hotel in Essex.

Judge Prue Leith said the show will look and feel normal when it is broadcast later this month.

She told the Mirror : “Honestly, I ended up thinking this is the safest place in the whole of England.

“All 130 people, which included hotel staff…we all had been tested to death.

“So when we were in the tent, we were allowed to behave absolutely freely.”

Other contestants in the series include a 61-year-old retirement team leader, a sculptor who lost a leg in a motorbike accident and a music teacher.

Paul Hollywood said he’d encountered some of the best baking ever on the show.

He added: “For the first time, I put a bit of weight on this year.”

Executive producer Kieran Smith told the Radio Times that filming had been “hugely liberating” for new host Matt Lucas, who had “barely been out” before filming.

Of Noel Fielding, he said: “Noel felt a lot happier in the bubble than he did in the real world.

“He’d pretty much been shielding in one location for several months, so the ability to walk in a green space and be able to talk to people face to face was liberating.”

The Great British Bake Off returns on Channel 4 on September 22, 2020.
