'Great ability' - Joe Cole hails Jonjo Shelvey after Newcastle's draw with Man City

Joe Cole is calling on Jonjo Shelvey to add more consistency to his game after his wonder strike against Man City earned Newcastle a point.

The Magpies twice trailed to the reigning Premier League champions, but Shelvey’s strike two minutes from time rescued his side a point.

And Cole, speaking to BT Sport after the draw at St James’ Park, believes his old Liverpool team-mate has the attributes to become a top player.

The former Chelsea man said. “He’s got great ability, Jonjo. He has got the capability of long-range passing, short-range. You look at his attributes and he has got all the clubs in the bag.

“He is capable of doing this type of thing against a world class goalkeeper. You just want to see it more from Jonjo.

“He needs to show this more consistent. Look at Kevin De Bruyne, he has done this multiple times. Jonjo needs it more and has got the ability.”

The verdict as Newcastle fight back twice to tame Manchester City

Fellow pundit Jermaine Jenas then added: “He had the armband on today. I like the way he spoke after the game about the understanding of the role and how they had to dig in and show character."

Before Cole concluded: “What I’ve noticed from Jonjo recently is that he has shortened his game down.

“JJ alluded to it. The discipline. He doesn't go for the killer pass all the time he keeps the ball and he has got real game-management into his game now.

“I just hope for him that he still has enough years in him so he can make that step-up into an even bigger club than Newcastle.

“At 27, he still has his best years ahead of him.”
