Grease prequel heading to TV is based on Pink Ladies and set four years before film

Grease's famous Pink Ladies are getting their own television series.

Paramount have green lit a new Grease prequel - which is set four years before the famous film, starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton John - about the famous four: Rizzo, Frenchy and Marty.

It will be a 10 episode series, with each lasting an hour, and will be written and executive produced by creator Annabel Oakes, Variety reports.

Marty Bowen and Erik Feig are also set to executive produce for Temple Hill and Picturestart respectively.

Paramount Plus purchased the rights to it last year from HBO Max, who had originally planned for it to be a High School Musical type series.

Meanwhile, HBO Max are set to air another television series based of the original Grease movie.

It will be called Grease: Rydell High and will even feature some of the musical movie's existing characters.

Sarah Aubrey, head of content at HBO Max, said in a statement two years ago: "Grease is an iconic pop-culture phenomenon that works for every generation, and I’m thrilled that our friends at Paramount were excited about the idea of opening up the show and putting it on a larger canvas for a weekly series.

"This is high school and life in small-town USA told on the scale of a big rock ’n’ roll musical. It’s Grease 2.0 but with the same spirit, energy and excitement you immediately think of when you hear any of these iconic songs. You’re the One That I Want!"

Starring in the hit movie together, Olivia and John were always subjected to romance rumours but the 69-year-old recently revealed just why she couldn't have dated her co-star whilst filming the movie and how their on-screen chemistry was better for it.

Speaking on the MammaMia No Filter podcast, she said: "We were both with other people when we were filming and I think, respectfully, it just didn’t happen.

"I think it was good, because I think it kept the tension there and the chemistry. It might have been a real disaster had we decided to date or we had a falling out or something.

"So I think it was just as well that it didn’t happen. But we’re still great friends."
