A police investigation has been launched after stolen gravestones, which were found under camouflage on a busy road, caused a traffic accident.

The stones were taken from Findon village cemetery, near Worthing in West Sussex, on Monday and placed on the southbound carriageway of the A24, covered with leaves and branches.

A Range Rover travelling on the southbound carriageway hit the stones, resulting in a punctured tyre and damage to the paintwork of the vehicle. The driver was not hurt.

Paul Waltho of Sussex police said: “This was a senseless act of vandalism and there may be other drivers whose vehicles may have been damaged who have not come forward.

“If anyone has any information about this incident, please contact us.”

Sussex police can be contacted by email at 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or by phone at 101 (quoting serial number 1601 of 21 March).
