Graves trashed in Glasgow cemetery after van driven over them then set on fire

A number of graves have been damaged in a North Glasgow cemetery after a van was driven over them repeatedly before being abandoned and set on fire.

The horrendous scene was discovered by locals in Lambhill Cemetery over the weekend.

Pictures obtained by Glasgow Live show the charred remains of what appears to be a transit van on a footpath in the cemetery, with glass and other debris from the vehicle littered around it and the nearby earth completely scorched.

The burnt out vehicle was encountered blocking the pathway used by those visiting the cemetery in their cars to access nearby graves at the far end of the cemetery facing over towards the fields next to Blackhill Road.

Prior to coming to rest, still visible tyre marks embedded in the grass show that the van had performed a large number of loops over the top of a number of nearby graves.

Not only has the van cause damage to the grass above some graves but it has also damaged the stonework and memorials left by on top of one grave.

The shocking incident is the second to happen this year in the cemetery, after we reported back in January how joyriders left a trail of destruction after driving over graves in a vehicle before abandoning it and setting it alight.

Such was the nature of the damage left on that occasion that pieces of one headstone was found lying metres away from a grave.

Both Glasgow City Council and Police Scotland have been contacted for comment.
