'Grave-robbing' returns to Edinburgh with launch of exciting new medical mystery themed escape room

A brand new escape room inviting people to descend into a world of grave robbery, mystery and malpractice is set to launch in Edinburgh

Located on the edge of Edinburgh's old surgical district, ‘The Anatomist’ will see participants experience the story as they enter the study of a 19th century anatomist.

Taking place shortly after the Burke & Hare murders, at a time when Edinburgh was one of Europe’s centres of medical learning, the puzzle room will see groups of up to 6 people challenged to solve a series of challenges within an hour as a "thrilling mystery" unfolds.

The Anatomist (Escape The Past)

The first project by local capital-based venture Escape the Past, The Anatomist is located in the basement of the Methodist Church at 25 Nicolson Square and is described as being similar to interactive version of the hugely popular Surgeons' Hall Museum.

Founder Chris Wood explained that while the plot itself is fictional, the setting and themes have been designed to "maximise realism", with the room featuring contemporary props and informative and gory details.

He added that people will be made to question how Dr Malcolm been procuring bodies for dissection? What research takes place here late into the night? And what terrible 'crime' did his assistant witness that caused him to flee in fear?

Tickets can only be purchased online at www.escapethepast.co.uk with people asked to book in advance and, due to the mature nature of the theme, there is a minimum age limit of 14 years.

Chris added that The Anatomist will appeal to both escape room lovers and those interested in Edinburgh’s history, he said: “Escape Rooms are a great opportunity for immersive story-telling. With ‘The Anatomist’, we’re involving multiple senses, live acting and special effects to bring the story and this period of Edinburgh’s history to life.

"Hopefully inspiring people to learn more about it."

Chris confirmed he team will be following Covid secure guidelines including enhanced cleaning between groups and limiting the number of groups per day.
