A dad has thanked NHS staff who treated him after he was struck down with Covid-19.
Wiebe Wierda, 52, tested positive for coronavirus after developing a cough and flu-like symptoms.
The dad of three, of Newton Mearns, near Glasgow, was admitted to the city’s Queen Elizabeth University Hospital last week struggling to breathe.
Doctors confirmed he had the illness and had also developed pneumonia.
Wiebe, originally from the Netherlands, spent six days as an inpatient but is now home with wife Nicola, 46, and sons Eddie, 15, Jack, 12, and Charlie, seven.
He said: “I fell ill two weeks ago and thought I had the flu.
“I felt extremely tired, like I’d been hit by a bus. I got a high temperature and was sweating.
“Out of the blue, I started coughing. In a few hours it became a barking cough and it took my breath away.
“After 10 days, I couldn’t breathe. I was in hospital for six days, with five of them on oxygen, but I’m feeling better.
“I want to say thank you to all the NHS staff. Their treatment was fantastic and outstanding.”
