Grassland wildfire in Essex as firefighters rush to nature reserve

  • A helicopter has been deployed to help tackle an "unpredictable" wildfire in Suffolk , while firefighters respond to another blaze at a nature reserve in North Essex.
  • The Suffolk wildfire at Dunwich Heath has spread to cover an area the size of 210 football pitches, leading to a major incident declaration and the evacuation of around 200 coastal properties and caravans.
  • The Sizewell B nuclear power plant , a few miles from the Suffolk blaze, is on alert, though nuclear chiefs state there is currently no risk to the facility.
  • Around 30 crew are battling a fire at Middlewick Ranges nature reserve in Colchester, Essex, amidst tinderbox conditions and drought across England and Wales.
  • Prime minister Andy Burnham has pledged all necessary resources for firefighters in Suffolk, while Green Party leader Zack Polanski called for an emergency Cobra meeting.
