The New England Highway reopened in both directions around 4pm Monday afternoon after a grassfire broke out near the road just north-west of Ravensworth.
Police were on the scene to assist with traffic control around 3.45pm, where they said a crane had caught fire on mining land and had sparked the grassfire.
The road was blocked in both directions with diversions for light vehicles via Pike Gully Road and Liddell Station Road in both directions, police said.
The fire was quickly brought under control by mining and NSW RFS firefighting crews.
The road has since re-opened and traffic is returning to normal.
