Grass at Broncos’ stadium holds up well for Gold Cup matches

The grass at Broncos Stadium at Mile High appeared to hold up well during doubleheader Gold Cup matches on Wednesday evening.

Martinique defeated Cuba 3-0 in the first match and Mexico defeated Canada 3-1 in the second match. A total of 52,874 fans were in attendance at the team’s 76,125-seat stadium.

About a week before the game, the Broncos’ turf team and Bush Sports Turf installed new sod for the Gold Cup matches. They layed down HD Sports 2.0 bluegrass sod, which is 1.5-inch thick sod grown in engineered sand on plastic.

“This extremely durable sod is encapsulated with roots which locks in the sand rootzone and reinforces the sod,” according to the Green Valley Turf Company’s website.

Up next for the stadium is an Outlaws lacrosse game on June 27 and a disc golf tournament on June 29. July will feature three more lacrosse games, a drum concert and an open Broncos training camp practice.

American football will return in August with Denver’s preseason home opener against the 49ers on Aug. 19. That game will be nationally televised on ESPN. Ten days later, the Broncos will wrap up preseason at home against the Cardinals on Aug. 29.

Gold Cup matches will likely return to Denver in the future and the city remains a candidate to host World Cup matches in 2026.
