Graphic photos show what has happened to this woman's leg after she fell in a town centre last year

These graphic photos show what has happened to a woman's leg since she fell in a shopping centre last year.

Sarah Coghlan was walking through Merseyway in Stockport town centre when she fell on the paving and gashed her leg, leaving her 'screaming in pain'.

She says the corners of some of brick-shaped paving slabs were sticking up out of the ground, and 'ripped' her leg just below her knee.

Camera operators spotted the 44-year-old fall on CCTV and called an ambulance, and she was taken to Stepping Hill.

Since then, Sarah says she has been been plagued by problems with her leg, including an ulcer and the painful infection cellulitis.

Nine months on she is still wearing a compression bandage, is under the care of the ulcer team at Wythenshawe and has lost some of the feeling in her leg.

Stockport Council says it regularly inspects Merseyway and defects are repaired as soon as possible.

But Sarah says she feels like her concerns haven't been taken seriously, and has chosen to speak out to warn other people about what has happened to her.

Sarah, from Cheadle, said: "I was outside Beaverbooks when I fell. I landed with a thud and my leg blew up.

"I fell sideways and it's ripped my leg. I was screaming in pain.

"It knocked me sick, it was horrendous and my leg is a mess. What if this was an elderly person?

"I'm an asthmatic and I had to take paracetamol for months every day for the pain, because I couldn't have anything else.

"I was told that if I was a diabetic, I would have lost the leg.

"Everyone keeps saying my leg is a mess. I don't know what to do".

A spokesperson for Stockport Council said: "Due to an ongoing legal case we cannot comment on this particular incident.

"However, we regularly inspect and maintain all areas of Merseyway and any defects are repaired by our contractors as soon as possible."
