Graphic Designs presenter Kevin McCloud's biggest pet peeve with Channel 4 show

Grand Designs host Kevin McCloud has revealed his biggest issue with the Channel 4 show - and it's understandable.

The 61-year-old presenter has fronted the show ever since it began in 1999, so it's not a surprise that he's seen his fair share of hiccups along the way.

Speaking to Stuff magazine Kevin opened up about the challenges the show faces when participants abandon projects.

Whether it's a marriage break-up, a difficult health diagnosis or a change of vision, sometimes things just don't always go to plan.

But that doesn't make it any easier on the crew who have followed the project since the beginning.

The TV star said: "It really disappoints me when people abandon ideas.

"I've come to recognise key phrases, such as 'We're having to cut out costs, so are putting our renewables (sustainable design elements) on hold.

"The rest of their architecture is (invariably) quite dull really, and I always think, 'thanks for telling us, now we've committed two years to following this'."

He continued: "And there are the builds that have brilliant architecture and ideas that go swimmingly well.

"But six months in, someone says, 'we ditched the architect, and we're going to do it ourselves... it will be fine'. There are always compromises when they do it on their own."

But there is one exception to the rule it seems, as Kevin mentions a couple who met in hospital as they were both receiving cancer treatment.

Despite their personal struggles, they continued with the build.

After six months Kevin visited their barn to see how they'd been getting on, and he was stunned to see that the homeowner had done everything himself, all while running a pub.

"What they’ve produced is one of the most beautiful things I’ve seen.

“Sometimes, your socks are blown off" he added.
