Graph shows drop in Nottinghamshire Covid-19 cases despite county being forced back into Tier 3

There has been a significant drop in the amount of coronavirus cases recorded across Nottinghamshire in recent weeks.

A graph, published by Nottinghamshire public health officials, measures the number of cases per 100,000 people and shows a fall in the epidemic curve from October to November, taking into account seven-day recorded data and the county entering Tier 3 restrictions for the first time and then the second national lockdown.

The graph was included in a Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Local Resilience Forum report, compiling Public Health England data and information from the surveillance system used to monitor cases of coronavirus across the county.

It shows a huge decrease from when the county-wide cumulative rate of infections peaked at 525 per 100,000 people on October 9, to the latest cumulative rate of 221 recorded on November 21.

Meanwhile, the latest Public Health England daily Covid-19 data has shown a total of 311 new cases of the virus were recorded across Nottinghamshire on Thursday, November 26.

It comes after it was confirmed Nottinghamshire will re-enter Tier 3 restrictions at the end of the national lockdown on December 2.

The Tier 3 announcement has been controversial as Nottingham City Council leader, Councillor David Mellen, wrote to Prime Minister Boris Johnson and said the city had seen a “dramatic and impressive turnaround" on the coronavirus rates and should not be placed under the strictest rules.

Officials from Public Health England raised concerns over not enough people in Nottingham being tested for coronavirus as a reason why the county will be put into the tough restrictions, an MP has since revealed.

After the Government announced the county was to enter the toughest local restrictions, Jonathan Gribbin, Nottinghamshire's Director of Public Health, said: “People across Nottinghamshire have achieved a reduction in rates over recent weeks and I welcome the move out of lockdown, and a set of arrangements from December 2 which are clear and consistent.

"We will support our communities and businesses to adapt to the new rules.

“The Government has also announced an easement of the rules for a few days covering the Christmas holiday period to enable family members or friends to meet up.

"As in the rest of the UK, people in Nottinghamshire are urged to exercise caution and to take care to work within the guidance about how to do this safely. In this way, we can maintain our momentum in lowering infection rates."
