Grant Holt says he never wanted to leave Nottingham Forest - but he could never get on with Colin Calderwood

Grant Holt says leaving Nottingham Forest was the toughest decision of his career after the breakdown of his relationship with Colin Calderwood.

The retired frontman joined Forest from Rochdale and was named player of the season in his first campaign, in 2006/07, after scoring 18 goals.

However, he was often played out of position on the wing as he failed to convince manager Calderwood he should start down the middle.

That led to them failing to get along, with Holt happy to voice his disatisfaction.

"We used to argue so much. I didn't like him. We just used to argue so much because I didn't like how he managed," Holt told the Under the Cosh podcast.

"We get on great now. I've seen him since because he was assistant manager (at Norwich, another of Holt's former clubs).

"I used to speak up when it was right to say something. I didn't start an argument for the sake of it.

"My biggest argument with him was that one year, he had no choice but to play me. Nathan Tyson had unfortunately done his ACL.

"I'd got 18 goals (the previous season) and was player of the year.

"The year after, with Junior Agogo, who has just passed away God bless him, he was the number nine.

"In the end I got stuck on the left wing. It wasn't the fact he stuck me out there because I'll work hard for anyone.

"What got me was the tough away days like Leeds or Brighton away, I played. Sheffield United at home, I played.

"I didn't score but I worked hard. Then when it's Chesterfield, who were struggling, at home, I was on the bench."

Holt says Forest were ready to sell him in January 2008, but it took until June that year for him to move on, when he signed for Shrewsbury Town for £170,000, saying he received the same salary there as he did at the City Ground.

"I knew he wanted to sell me. They tried to sell me to Bristol City in the January," he said.

"We'd just had the baby and I didn't want to move. I loved Forest.

"Leaving there was the hardest decision I've ever made. I never requested a move.

"They kept putting me out to tender. Paul Trollope rang me at Bristol Rovers.

"I walked in (to Forest) and said 'I don't care if you're putting my name out, just tell me'.

"Shrewsbury came in and I went there in the end. I'd already gone to Blackpool on loan but it was pointless.

"I spent eight weeks chasing Simon Grayson round trying to find out why I wasn't playing."
