Grant Hanley out of Scotland squad as Steve Clarke dealt huge blow ahead of Moldova showdown

Grant Hanley is out of Scotland ’s World Cup qualifiers with Moldova and Denmark.

Norwich City boss Daniel Farke has confirmed the central defender will be out for at least two to three weeks with a groin issue.

The German manager revealed the news ahead of his side’s weekend clash with Brentford in the English Premier League.

The news will come as a huge blow to Steve Clarke, with Hanley one of Scotland’s top defenders in this World Cup qualifying campaign.

The national team head out to Spain for a training camp next week and then head to Chisinau for Thursday’s game with Moldova, which could seal a play in the play-offs for 2022.

If Scotland win the match they cannot be caught by Austria or Israel, and would face two one-legged ties to make it to Qatar.

They then sign off their campaign with a home clash against group winners Denmark.

Hanley came off in the dying embers of last week’s defeat to Leeds United with the injury.

The 29-year-old was sent for a scan on the injury on Tuesday but didn’t have the results before Clarke named his squad.

Scotland are also sweating on Arsenal’s Kieran Tierney who hasn’t played for his club in recent weeks because of an ankle issue.
