Granit Xhaka wants showdown talks at Arsenal to "sort out" captaincy controversy

Granit Xhaka is returning to Arsenal looking to "sort matters out" having not played for the club since his infamous substitution against Crystal Palace , a matter he says he still can't accept.

The Swiss international was booed as he was hauled off in last month's 2-2 draw at home to the Eagles, and he was seen angrily telling fans to "f*** off" as he made his way off the pitch to be replaced by youngster Bukayo Saka.

Xhaka later issued a statement partially apologising for any offence caused by his behaviour, although he also criticised fans for getting on his back and outlined some of the sick threats against himself and his family that he had been receiving online.

The subsequent row saw the 27-year-old eventually stripped of the club captaincy and replaced by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, while he has failed to appear in any of Arsenal's four matches since the incident - the Carabao Cup loss at Liverpool , Premier League draw at home to Wolves , Europa League draw at Vitoria or the Premier League defeat at Leicester .

Xhaka did, however, play the full 90 minutes in both of Switzerland's Euro 2020 qualifiers against Georgia and Gibraltar in the past week, donning the captain's armband in the latter game and scoring in a 6-1 win.

"I have a clear idea as to how things should proceed, and Arsenal know this as well," he told Swiss publication SRF after that match, via the Mail Online .

"Although I still have a contract with them, I will be glad to return to the club - so we can finally sort matters out.

"There will surely be a solution - as I can't accept what has happened with me."

The Gunners return to action with a Premier League game at home to Southampton on Saturday.
