Granit Xhaka trains as Arsenal prepare for Liverpool clash amid uncertainty over future

Granit Xhaka trained with Arsenal on Tuesday amid speculation over his future with the club.

The Swiss midfielder is set to miss the Carabao Cup clash with Liverpool on Wednesday night following his clash with supporters during the draw with Crystal Palace .

The midfielder reacted angrily when fans cheered his substitution, cupping his ear before appearing to tell supporters to 'f*** off'.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Emery admitted Xhaka had been left 'devastated' by the incident during the 2-2 draw.

"It’s not easy for him and for the team. He is now devastated, sad. We spoke yesterday and Sunday night and this morning," Emery said.

“He trained normally with the group but he is devastated. He is sad about that situation.

“His commitment is great every time. He wants to help. His behaviour was perfect in training, with the group and club. Really he knows he was wrong.

Emery encouraged Xhaka to apologise for his behaviour but refused to be drawn on whether he would retain the Arsenal captaincy.

"I think when we make an individual mistake, we need to make an apology," Emery said.

"He has those values, he has experience, he is captain of his national team has the conditions to be the captain.

"He was wrong on Sunday and it wasn't the right response of a captain.

“At the moment I'm not speaking [if he will remain captain] and I don't want to think about that."

Mesut Ozil did train at London Colney as he prepares to return to the first-team for the clash with Liverpool.

On the German, who has been missing for over a month, Emery said: "He feels inside, very deep. It’s normal as a human. Every player needs the supporters’ support.

"We are going through a difficult moment and it is our work and job to play under that pressure.

“It was a very good conversation. Tomorrow he is in the group.

“We need his quality, his skill. We need his consistency. We need his positive mentality. Then we need him to help us on the pitch."
