Granit Xhaka sends message to critics following north London derby penalty mistake

Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka has hit back at his critics following the north London derby.

Arsenal fought back from 2-0 down to claim a point against Tottenham at the Emirates.

Christian Eriksen tapped the visitors in front before Xhaka, who was wearing the captain's armband, conceded a penalty for a rash challenge on Son Heung-min

Xhaka has been heavily criticised in the aftermath of the game but the Swiss midfielder insists some of it is unfair.

"Of course critics are always here. The north London derby, I think we had a good game," Xhaka said.

"I made a mistake with the penalty but if you saw the game, we could have won."

"We had a lot of chances but this is football. Nobody speaks about the chances, nobody speaks about how many we missed.

"They always speak about the mistakes. This is part of football."

Xhaka is now away with the Swiss national side ahead of their clash with Republic of Ireland.

Xherdan Shaqiri did not join up with the squad after asking not to be considered by his country, to focus on his club football.

There have been suggestions the decision to appoint Xhaka as captain is behind Shaqiri's frustration but the midfielder has played down speculation.

"I can only speak about how important he is for this team," said Xhaka.

"He is a great player, great quality. He can help us in every game and we are very disappointed that he is not here.

"But we have other players as well who have quality."
